Border Collies are very popular dogs who make lovely family pets. They are intelligent and full of energy so it is not surprising that Border Collie mixes are becoming so popular. A purebred Border Collie was bred to work as a farm dog and their herding instinct is strong. They also have amazing stamina.
Mixed breeds are becoming more and more popular and do allow owners to avoid some of the health concerns associated with pure bred dogs. However, there is always some unpredictability associated with mixed breed puppies and Border Collie mix puppies are no exception. That’s just part of the excitement. We’ve researched the 22 most popular Border Collie combinations and what you need to know about them.
1. Border Jack
The Jack Russell Terrier is much smaller than a pure Border Collie so this may be the best Border Collie mix for you if you are looking for a smaller dog. The desire to chase small fluffy animals, a characteristic of the Jack Russell, will still be strong in this mixed breed so this is something to bear in mind. Your Border Collie Terrier mix will be eager to learn but will need a confident trainer.
Your Border Jack will have the cutest pointed nose. They can grow to around 20 inches in height and weigh up to 40 pounds with wiry short hair.
2. Golden Border
The Golden Retriever is one of the most popular pet dogs in the US so it is hardly surprising that the Golden Border Retriever combination is so well loved. You get the friendliness and easy going personality of the Golden Retriever and a pup that loves to chill and is wonderful with young children. However, you still need to provide an hour of exercise a day and a paddle in a lake or river would be very much appreciated.
Both parent breeds are quite large so you will get a dog that could grow to weigh 65 pounds and stand 23 inches high but some are much smaller. They are also likely to shed – a lot!
3. Bordernese
A Border Collie mixed with a Bernese Mountain Dog is called a Bordernese. The pups are often a Black Border Collie mix but they can also be brown or white, depending on the colors of the parent. Taking some personality characteristics from the Bernese Mountain Dog parents, these dogs can be aloof with strangers and quite protective of their human family. But the people that they know will see their soft and affectionate side.
They will inherit the Border Collie’s intelligence but their size will come from their Bernese parent. You can expect them to grow to as much as 90 pounds in weight and 25 inches in height.
4. Border Heeler
The Australian cattle dog is also called a Blue Heeler and the Border Collie mix is called a Border Heeler. Of all the Border Collie mix breeds, these are going to be one of the best herding dogs. The Blue Heeler usually introduces quite a lot of patterning into the coat but the pups are likely to inherit the thick Border Collie coat.
Both the Blue Heeler and Border Collie breeds can run and herd all day so be prepared to provide at leats 90 minutes of vigorous exercise everyday for your Border Aussie mix. A Border Heeler will weigh up to 50 pounds when fully grown and can reach a height of 21 inches.
5. Border Beagle
The Border Beagle is sometimes called a Borgle and can be so laid back that they come across as a little aloof. This can be a problem if you want constant adoration and interaction with your pup. Having said that, these mixed Border Collie puppies are exceptionally fond of children.
The Beagle markings tend to be most dominant in these Border Collie crosses so these Collie mixed puppies will have the usual Beagle hunting colors and large droopy ears. They can grow to up to 45 pounds in weight and 19 inches tall.
6. Border Newfie
A Border Collie mix with a Newfoundland gives you one of the heaviest of the Border collie mix breeds. Border Newfie parents bring different characteristics into the mix. From their Border Collie parent they get their sweet nature and quite a lot of hair.
From the Newfoundland parent they get even more hair and quite a lot of drool so this pup will shed a lot and would prefer a cooler climate. This is the fluffiest of all the Border Collie mixes and can grow to a massive 120 pounds and a height of 26 inches.
7. Shollie
When Border Collies are mixed with a German Shepherd you get a Shollie. They make a fantastic herding dog with a protective instinct. You can expect this German Shepherd and Border Collie hybrid to become very attached to one member of the family who they will adore. This person will be their master and will enjoy absolute loyalty.
The Shollie will reach up to 24 inches in height and weigh a maximum of 75 pounds. Their coat could be black, brown or white but will probably have the patterning of the German Shepherd. It will need a lot of grooming and you should expect a lot of shedding.
8. Borders
The Border Collie Husky mix is probably the most energetic dog of the Collie mixes and will need loads of both mental and physical stimulation and obedience training to keep them in check. The stubborn streak of the Husky will probably be diluted by the Border Collie. The Border Husky will be one of the smartest dog breeds obtained from Border Collie mixes.
Most Bordesky pups are fluffy and inherit the Husky parent coloring. As an adult, the Siberian Husky mix will weigh between 35 and 55 pounds and have a height of up to 23 inches.
9. Border Pyrenees
Border Pyrenees parents bring size and a lot of hair to this mix and your Border Collie mix puppy will grow up to be a large herding breed. However, as well as being a very hard worker, these wonderful dogs also love to spend time with their human family and become very attached to family members.
This powerful herding dog can grow to weigh 100 pounds and can be up to 27 inches tall. To provide a suitable home for this Border Collie mix you need a large house and a large garden. They are not at all suitable for apartment living.
10. Borador
The Labrador Retriever and Border Collie mix results in an utterly charming Borador although you may also see them called Labracollies. This is one of the more energetic of the Border Collie mix breeds and will need plenty of exercise. This lovable and sociable dog will thrive on being the center of attention and make great family dogs. Just watch out for the herding instincts which can get out of control.
You can expect this Border Collie mix to grow to around 20 to 23 inches high and weigh up to 70 pounds. They will have a medium length coat and will shed a lot!
11. Border Point
When a German Shorthaired Pointer is crossed with a Border Collie you get a gorgeous dog called a Border Point. This is one of the more popular Border Collie mixes which is probably down to their loyalty and ease of training. From their Pointer parents they inherit an affectionate nature and a love of cuddles.
These mixed Border Collie pups can grow up to be up to 60 pounds in weight and have a height of around 24 inches. They can have a short or medium coat that will be predominantly black and white but with some spotting or roan patches.
12. Collie Cocker
When you breed a Cocker Spaniel with a Border Collie you get an energetic pooch that is becoming one of the increasingly popular designer dogs. Both parent breeds are high energy dogs that love to run around. You can expect this Cocker Spaniel – Border Collie mix to be polite and happy-go-lucky but also expect a high prey drive too!
Sometimes called a Collie Spaniel, these dogs will be between 14 and 19 inches tall and weigh between 24 and 45 pounds. A Collie Cocker would suit a household that loves the outdoors and need an hour’s exercise every day.
13. Border Sheepdog
The mix of a Border Collie and a Shetland Sheepdog is called a Border or a Borderland. They are one of the smartest dog breed mixes listed here and are like a fluffy herding machine! Your pup will be intelligent and playful and hopefully a little better with strangers and other dogs than purebred Border Collies.
The coat of these herding dogs can be brown, cream, white or black and will require quite a lot of grooming to keep it in check. They have a medium size body and will reach around 18 inches in height and weigh between 20 and 45 pounds.
14. Border Collie Bernard
The Border Collie and St Bernard cross produces adorable pups called Border Collie Bernards. They are friendly and intelligent and will go out of their way to protect their family. They will need plenty of physical and mental stimulation to keep them happy and will enjoy anything that involves herding, agility or sniffing!
Their coat will be tough and dense and will be a combination of brown and white. These pups will grow a lot! As an adult they can reach 120 pounds and reach a height of 35 inches.
15. Afghan Collie
Afghan Collie parents are a Border Collie and an Afghan Hound. These pups will be very talented when it comes to detecting, retrieving, tracking and obedience. They will be great with older children but will need correct socialization in order to cope with other dogs. This Border Collie hybrid needs loads of exercise to keek them fit and happy.

This charming cross between a Border Collie and an American Pit Bull Terrier creates a fairly intense character that is totally loyal to their family. It’s common for these dogs to have a black and white coat from their Border Collie parent but for it to be short and sleek. This short haired Border Collie mix will have an athletic build and weigh between 30 and 60 pounds. Their height can be anything between 18 and 21 inches.
17. Aussie Collies
The Border Collie Australian Shepherd mix results in an Aussie Collie, sometimes called a Border Aussie. As you would expect when you combine two expert herders, you will get a superb herding dog. Ideally, you will be using this Border Collie mix as a working dog. Both the Australian Shepherd and the Border Collie are dog breeds that need loads of exercise and respond well to obedience training. If you want one as a pet, be prepared to give them at least 90 minutes of vigorous exercise a day!
This dog will probably inherit the Aussie coat and could have different colored eyes. They will grow to around 23 inches tall and can weigh up to 60 pounds.
18. Border Springer
The Springer Spaniel is a high energy dog with endless stamina so when you combine them with a Border Collie you get a dog that needs a lot of exercise! They are very playful and sweet natured but separation anxiety will be a big problem if you are away from home a lot. Your Border Springer will excel at dog sports and will be hunting for birds when you are out.
These popular Border Collie mix puppies will reach about 21 inches in height and weigh a maximum of 50 pounds. They have an adorable face with huge round eyes and a Collie coat that has a slight kink in it.
19. Borderstaff
Cross a Staffordshire Bull Terrier with a Border Collie and you get the charming Borderstaff. This loving short-haired Border Collie mix (some may have a medium coat) will be loyal, fun and very sociable. Almost the perfect family dog! They love children and will like nothing more than spending time with you. Just check that there are no local laws on crossing Bull Terriers in your area.
This stocky and muscular Border Collie hybrid can weigh up to 50 pounds even though they only grow to around 20 inches tall at the most. Their face and jaw will probably be classic Staffy and their coat is likely to be short.
20. Kelpie Collie
This is quite a rare Border Collie hybrid that has a fox-like face. The combination of the Border Collie and the Kelpie produces a dog with limitless energy that could work all day on a farm. The problem here is that most of us do not live on farms so be prepared to provide them with at least 90 minutes of vigorous exercise every day. They have an independent streak which some owners like but they need a firm handler.
When it comes to appearance, the Kelpie Collie can have a mix of colors from both parents – reds, blacks and whites. They have a muscular build and will weigh between 25 and 50 pounds. You can expect them to grow to around 20 inches tall.
22. Bordoodle
Poodle crosses are very popular as the pups often (but not always) inherit the non-shedding coat and intelligence of their Poodle parent. Therefore, it is not surprising that the Poodle and Border Collie combination is so popular. The Bordoodle is a great family dog that will suit owners of all ages.
They will have a long wavy coat with relaxed curls and can be a wide variety of colors. Their medium length coat will need weekly grooming. Your Bordoodle will grow to around 50 pounds in weight and to a height of around 16 inches.
