A cat, wrapped in a cooler and black bin bag and abandoned outside a shelter, was saved by a Husky’s strong nose and determination.
Whilst out for a walk with her owner, Koda the husky picked up a scent on the air and felt the need to investigate. It was an especially hot day when Koda noticed a black bin bag sat on a bench outside Fearless Kitty Rescue in Fountain Hills, Arizona. On this hot Saturday morning, Koda pulled per owner to the bag in order to sniff it properly.
It was only when Koda refused to leave the bag alone and continued to sniff it relentlessly, that her owner decided perhaps she should take a closer look. Upon opening the bad she found a red cooler, inside which was an extremely distressed, but alive, black cat.
Were it not for the unlikely canine hero, this cat would have potentially spent hours, if not days, inside the bag, if it could have survived that long. According to Teryn Jones, a spokesperson for the Fearless Kitty Rescue, it had been extremely warm inside the plastic bag that the poor kitty had been stuffed into.
Arizona is known for being an extremely hot place when summer rolls around, and throughout June the state had experienced temperatures in excess of 100 degrees. This day had been no different, topping at 107 degrees by mid-afternoon, according to Accuweather.
The exhausted and massively overheated kitty was quickly taken in by the Fearless Kitty Rescue (FKR) shelter and was immediately treated for dehydration among other things. She has not affectionately been named Juliane by the staff at the shelter.
Jones spoke with AZFamily.com, explaining that the name had been carefully selected from Danish culture. The definition of the name is “fearless”. This is a fun mirroring of the Fearless Kitty Rescue’s name and the cat’s clear determination and fearlessness whilst trapped in that bag. “We think she is the true definition of fearless,” said Jones.
Nobody knows exactly how long Juliane had been trapped inside that cooler and bin bag. But she is lucky that Koda was there to sniff her out and save the day. There’s no telling how long she would have been left there had it not been Koda’s determination not to leave until the bag was opened.
Fortunately, Juliane is recovering well from her ordeal under the kind care and protection of the staff of the FKR shelter. However, there is the possibility that a suspicious mass on her tail may need to be amputated. There is no way to know whether or not this was the reason for her abandonment. However, as pet ownership numbers have sored during the covid pandemic with no thought to the cost of medical care, it would not be beyond a reasonable assumption.
Fearless Kitty Rescue has now witnessed three cat abandonments so far in 2021. Following this Jones has put forward hard, but truthful words for those thinking of putting animals in any kind of danger in the future, whether or not it was done with good intentions.
“You just can’t do this to animals. Well, you can’t do this to anyone, let’s be honest,” Jones stated frankly. “Animals don’t have a voice, so they can’t tell you what’s going on.”
The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating this case, in the hopes of locating the person responsible for abandoning Juliane in such a cruel manner.
